Following on from an overwhelmingly positive response to our recent poll the Help My Mobility team have decided to launch a government petition in an effort to make mobility scooter insurance a legal requirement in the UK.

Over 230 people voted in the poll, with 71% of those people stating that they would support moves to make insurance compulsory.

Through engagement with respondents, the Help My Mobility team discovered that most scooter users already had insurance, and felt that making it compulsory would make the UKs roads and pavements safe for all users.

However, while most people opt to have insurance on a voluntary basis, a lack of insurance still causes problems in the UK, as HMM director Jason Tate explains;

œThere are 300,000 scooters in the UK now, up from 70,000 five years ago. As such, news reports of thefts and accidents are on the increase. We hear of people who have had to sell their homes due to legal costs after an accident, or been left confined to their house following a theft. This kind of thing should not happen, he said.
