The Horizon scooter range includes some of the most powerful products on the market – the Maya and the Saxon. Paul takes an in depth look into what the range offers.
Paul: Okay so here we are on the stand with Horizon Mobility and Peter Graham has been with our website from the very start really. Graham is a member of our mobility advisor team. And we are going to look today at the Horizon produces a very special type of scooters, heavy-duty scooters, so we looked at the Pride’s range earlier, the small portable scooters, 4 mph and 8 mph scooters, which can be used on the road. Now these products are much more specialized, much more robust in their build quality. We have got the Mayan here which is incredible and we’ll get Graham to take you through some of the features on that. Just looking at the range Graham, can we start with a small scooter, the Saxon?
Peter: Correct, yes which is for everyday use really. We can go shopping, -- it is a road going machine so it is obviously 4 to 8 miles an hour. It comes fitted with lights and indicator and bearings etc to be road going. From the Saxon, there is another scooter that looks very similar in design, it is called the Aztec. But obviously it has got other specifications. And from the Aztec you come up to Mayan which we are looking at here. This is what you are looking at is a unique machine here. Every scooter in the world has a DC motor, but this one is the only one in the world with a three phase AC motor fitted.
Peter: That is what we call the AC model.
Paul: AC motors have come from an industrial application
Peter: That was the background in the industry. But there is a company who has developed the AC motor small enough so that we can actually fit it into our machine. Incredible power and incredible talk, not this particular machine but a machine very much like it, fitted with the AC motors as Primax- and he didn’t even know it he was doing it. It is just incredible.
Paul: For getting people out into the mountains, hill walking, this really is up to the job, it is a specialist?
Peter: Absolutely. And if they want to take a picnic for the day, we can put a turbo on the back and link a trailer as well. Again this machine would not even notice. And one very important point, these machines are so strong and so well-made, British built, at our factory in Cheltenham, in Gloucester. Now you can have a very large person, sitting on this machine and it will still perform in exactly the same way as if you and I were on it. Actually, it is the strongest scooter in the world and it can carry a 65 stone person. Not on that seat, you’ll have to put a bigger seat on.
Paul: But the tubing and the chassis and motors are up to that?
Peter: yes, that machine would take that weight and it has got very big springs on it. And it has independent suspensions by the way for each wheel. For the springs on the back which takes all the weight is because the batteries are under the seat and obviously that is where the person is sitting. And the motor transacts this all under that seat area so the springs on the back are obviously a lot more stronger than those in the front. And they can be adjusted because every scooter is made, custom made to the requirements of the client.
Paul: can we tell people that you have done some crazy colors and camouflage and?
Peter: I wish you hadn’t mentioned camouflage because it was quite a pain. The chap wears camouflage outfit, he lives like that in the countryside, so he wanted his scooter to match his image. He wanted a camouflage pipe-work, which is very difficult to do because it is parallel cut with many layers on here. So to do his particular scooter, it had to have a base color and the rest of it to be hand painted. So we do not encourage that.
Paul: Is there a typical buyer for these specification-scooters? Is it younger people, who are from, we get a lot of inquiries from people from farmland or maybe people who are farmers but still have got land and they want to go out or is it a real mixture?
Peter: Well actually, it makes an older person feel young because this machine turns heads when it is out on the path and people look at it flying by and coping with difficult terrain etc. So it does attract a great interest but younger people also like it has been described as quite a funky machine.
Paul: Yeah, it’s cool, very cool.
Because of the design of it. Most top speed? Can I tell the mark-up? It can do 20 miles per hour.
Paul: Qualified at 15 and it can do 20?
Peter: Well we build it, we calibrate it, so I have actually sat on one of these machines doing 20 miles an hour and it is scary. So we don’t send them out. There is a yellow switch on the dashboard there. That is what we call Load 3. This is a road going machine so it can do 4 up to 8 miles an hour. But if you are off-road and that is why we put the disclaimer on the dashboard here. It states: ‘Mode 3 can be used on private lands’. And we repeat it for them because if the police will stop you on the public highway at 15 mph and you are speeding, you are acting irresponsibly and you are breaking the speed limit. So that is why we have to put that on it. On private land or off road, you can use mode 3.
Paul: Obviously scooter of this specification is a big investment for most people. how do people buy through Horizon. Do they come and try and buy the product?
Peter: That is where I come in. Because like I had a gentleman this morning who rang in and he is desperate to go off-road with his machine. he cannot do with his present scooter and he went on to the website, saw what this machine potentially can do so I have arranged to go and see him next week. I am going to his home, and will take one of these along with me. So we are going to try the scooter in the environment that he wants to use it. That is important. People say to us, I will come to you in Cheltenham but what is the benefit of that. Because then they can only try it up and down the road. I would prefer with no application whatsoever. I am very proud of this machine, very passionate about it and I love to take it to the home and will often travel in my van. I will take the scooter and take the client to the wooded area or the country park or where I want to se the scooter and we’ll just have some fun. There are always, always, there are no exceptions, they are impressed. And it always performs more than what they expected it to do.
Peter: So it sells itself.
Paul: So if you have got any other questions about it, the Horizon range and you are looking for a scooter that offers a lot more, please get in touch with our website or have a look on the Horizon website and get in touch with Peter. Thanks for your time, Peter.
