What is a mobility scooter? Do I need one?
Mobility scooters come in a range of shapes and sizes, different makes and models, and offer various features and functions to meet the needs of a diverse user base. Often associated with the elderly – a stereotype which wrongly stigmatises the scooter users
– scooters offer anyone with a physical disability, whether major or minor, the freedom to travel unassisted. Such is the variety on offer that finding the right scooter is a personal matter. Some may want comfort or portability while others prefer style or manoeuvrability. There is no right or wrong answer here. Make sure to try out different models and choose what is right for you.
Where should I start?
Decide what you require a scooter for. Is it to help you get to the shops down the road, or do you need to travel a few miles to reach your local supermarket? If you plan on making long journeys, you will need to consider battery life and comfort, as well as perhaps getting a road worthy machine which travels faster. Maybe you are looking for something more nimble to use around the house, in which case you need to look at 3-wheel models. Perhaps you require something which has the ability to fold up and fit into your car boot, if it is being used for small durations. Or it might be that you love the outdoors and want to go walking with a partner or friend, in which case you’ll need a 4x4 machine with off-road tyres and a soft suspension. Also consider things like swivel seats, which can assist you greatly if you have limited mobility in your legs and lower body. Lights and indicators should also be on your mind if you plan to use the roads or travel at night.
